Hey, I am Shameem!

Who I Am

I’m Shameem Abdul Salam, a platform and DevOps engineer currently at CENTOGENE. Over the past decade I’ve worked across infrastructure engineering, solutions architecture, technical consulting, and team leadership—helping organizations design, run, and improve cloud-native and hybrid platforms.

What I Do Today

At CENTOGENE I work on bioinformatics and laboratory platform infrastructure: Terraform across multiple AWS regions, AWS Batch for compute-heavy scientific pipelines, container builds through GitLab CI and ECR, and hybrid integrations between on-prem lab systems and cloud storage.

Day-to-day work spans IAM and KMS, VPC networking, observability, production debugging, and making batch pipelines reliable—not only shipping web applications.

Core focus areas:

  • Scientific & batch platforms — AWS Batch, large EBS/EFS/FSx volumes, job queues, and pipeline debugging
  • Multi-region Terraform — modular IaC, environment-specific deployments, remote state, tagging and cost governance
  • Hybrid lab-to-cloud — instrument and lab data flows into S3, secure mounts, on-prem pollers, and network path troubleshooting
  • Container delivery — GitLab CI and GitHub Actions, Docker images to ECR, ECS for application workloads
  • Regulated-environment operations — encryption (KMS), least-privilege IAM, CloudWatch logging, SNS alerting
  • General AWS architecture — VPC, RDS/Aurora, Lambda, ALB, S3, CloudFront, CloudWatch, and cost optimization

Earlier Work & Consulting

Before life sciences platform work, I spent years on e-commerce and SaaS infrastructure—Magento multisite hosting, LEMP stacks, Varnish caching, GitHub Actions and Azure DevOps pipelines, and client-facing infrastructure audits. That background still informs how I think about reliability, caching, and operational clarity.

Industries & Contexts

  • Life sciences & bioinformatics — batch pipelines, data movement, platform operations
  • Diagnostic & laboratory systems — LIMS-adjacent integrations, hybrid cloud patterns
  • E-commerce & SaaS — Magento, Laravel, containerized web workloads
  • Consulting & audits — migrations, vendor transitions, cost and reliability reviews

How I Work

I prefer practical, realistic solutions over hype. That means automating repetitive work, designing for reliability at scale, communicating clearly with stakeholders, and keeping an eye on cost and maintainability.

I’ve managed DevOps teams, mentored interns, supported technical hiring, and worked directly with clients on proposals, transitions, and handovers.

Beyond Work

Outside of infrastructure and automation, I enjoy 3D printing and gardening—both good reminders that good systems need patience, iteration, and care.
